Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 7th grade special education at a middle school in a diverse but poverty stricken area. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, interests, and goals. However, they all have one things in common, the desire to learn. With their varying levels of abilities, some are learning the basics of math and reading while others are applying their knowledge to real world problems.
I am very proud of my students and how hard they try, and I am proud to be part of a middle school that supports them and their diversity every day.
Their lives are hard both in school and out. The don't see a lot of success in themselves, or their futures; especially with being in special education. I strive to do my very best to change that! These kids need the opportunity to shine and become champions!
My Project
Technology is naturally more engaging than paper or books. My students are far more motivated to work and less likely to disrupt others, when using technology.
Using technology in the classroom also helps students focus on their individualized goals.
There are many research-based, educational apps and programs are available to support my students diverse needs and abilities. With iPads in the classroom, my students with learning disabilities can access text-to-speech, reading, writing and math applications. There are also many apps that can also help support those with Autism, cognitive delays or communication disorders.
Most importantly, having access to technology will allow my students to learn and grow, and find success in what they can do to become champions!
