Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Imagine a classroom where learning math isn’t just about numbers on a page—it’s about touching, moving, building, and experiencing math firsthand. As a 1st grade teacher, I’ve seen how young learners thrive when they can physically interact with the concepts they’re being taught. That’s why I’m requesting 10 Math Manipulative Toolkits designed specifically for small group instruction and at-home learning.

In the classroom, students will use these toolkits during math rotations and small group instruction to explore concepts such as counting, addition, subtraction, place value, and patterns.

For example, they’ll use base ten blocks to build numbers, pattern blocks to explore shapes and symmetry, and number lines to understand sequencing. These hands-on tools help make abstract concepts more concrete, allowing students to visually and physically solve problems. This not only increases engagement but also strengthens understanding and retention. For students who need extra support, the tactile nature of these tools helps bridge learning gaps by giving them multiple ways to process information.

But the impact doesn’t stop at school. Each toolkit will also double as a lending kit, giving families access to the same powerful tools we use in class. This means students can continue exploring and practicing math at home with support from their loved ones. By involving families in the learning process, we’re not just teaching math—we’re building confidence and creating joyful learning experiences that extend beyond the school day.

Many of my students come from underserved backgrounds and may not have access to educational materials outside of school. These toolkits will provide a consistent, equitable resource for all learners, ensuring every child has the tools to succeed.
