My Students
My students attend a diverse, urban high school with a school population of over 3,000 students. The majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. There were 68 different countries represented in the graduation class of 2017. The high school also has a significant English Language Learners and Special Education population.
My students are high school students who have a range of learning disabilities.
My students struggle with reading, writing and would benefit from materials that would engage them in learning through pathways. It is essential to their learning that they are able to understand their study of history and how it connects to current events.
My Project
The book Vanguard by Martha Jones will engage students in a conversation about Social Justice in the classroom by focusing on the right to vote.
How can I build bridges of understanding in the classroom?
You incorporate books that discusses historical events that have not been accurately represented in the textbooks and classrooms. These books will allow my students to connect to the concept of Social Justice in a real and concrete way. Students need the vocabulary and the discussion piece to build up an understanding of the past that impact people's lives to this day. The book Vanguard will help my students start to build bridges of understanding and acceptance.
