This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every morning I wonder whether a child is homeless and hungry. I can give them food to fill their bellies and love to ease the pain of homelessness, but can I give them the gift of reading? I wish I had the money to create an engaging library so that they can dream of the magic the world holds.
My students come from broken homes and almost 99% of our student population receives free lunch.
We are located on the lower east side of Manhattan. Most of my students struggle with reading fluency and comprehension. They are limited in their experiences of the world and are in dire need of reading intervention. We lack the books and parental support needed to propel forward. For most, the classroom is their only source of security, safety, and role models. It may the only time they can hear a read aloud because their parents work nights or two jobs. My students are my children and I want to ensure they have all they need to rise beyond their circumstances.
My Project
The leveled readers will fill my bins in the library with magic that will draw students toward unwrapping the gift of reading books. This will help to discover a world where there is no limits to their imagination and dreams. The biographies will inspire them to dream of their future and teach them how to persevere through their struggles. Also, it will foster their content knowledge of leaders who shaped our world and motivate them to make a difference. The read aloud books will help them to develop listening, comprehension and context clues skills that will improve their ability to become conscious readers who are amazed by their characters world. We really need your help to bridge the socioeconomic gap and to build an equitable educational system where all students can have equal access to learning without being limited by their circumstances. Books are the support for the bridges that students must cross to get to their success.
The donations to this project will develop a sense of a caring community for my students.
They will learn to become more aware of their environment, increase their oral and written vocabulary. They will also learn to chase after their knowledge through the pages of a book and taste the sweetness that exists in our world. My students will uncover a world filled with hope and dreams that are possible through characters and leaders of this world. A book is their key to their future and dreams.
