My Project
Many students are eager to tackle chapter books but face barriers due to limited decoding skills. To meet the needs of young readers who are not yet ready for traditional chapter books, we aim to provide access to high-interest decodable books that bridge the gap between early reading skills and the joy of longer, more complex stories. By offering engaging, age-appropriate content that aligns with their developing literacy skills, this initiative will empower students to build confidence, fluency, and a lifelong love of reading.
For many students, the transition from simple picture books to authentic chapter books is a significant hurdle.
While they may be capable of understanding complex plots and characters, they often lack the decoding proficiency to access the text. Traditional chapter books, with their challenging vocabulary and longer passages, can be discouraging. There is a clear need for chapter books that are both age-appropriate in content and decodable in terms of language, offering students a more accessible route to developing their literacy skills while keeping them engaged.
Our goal is to provide a diverse collection of high-interest decodable chapter books for emerging readers in grades 1-3. These books will have controlled vocabulary, simple sentence structures, and captivating themes that keep students motivated, helping them build their fluency and decoding skills in the context of longer texts.
