Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our high school is comprised of 70% English Language Learners, most of whom are from Latin America or the Dominican Republic, many having limited or no education prior to joining our school community. Literacy is key to building the skills necessary for students to become independent citizens who can contribute to the community.
Book clubs allow for small groups of students to build on their literacy while diving into various topics such as race, class, gender, equity, culture, and many more.
Just Mercy is not only a novel but has been produced into a series, so students will be able to connect the reading to the visual production while discussing the topics of police brutality, racism, and if everyone does actually get equal representation.
This opportunity will also allow students to explore topics they may have a high interest in, provide an inroad for them to explore college and career pathways, and identify various fields they may want to study for or enter once they are done with high school.
