My Students

Teaching in a low socioeconomic status school environment can be a challenge, but the students that I teach make this a challenge worth facing. My students come from varied backgrounds, from being refugees and first-generation citizens to living in single-parent homes and being homeless. Some of my students are the primary after-school caretakers of younger siblings, while some ride the bus to a shelter that serves as their current home. Many of my middle school students do not have cell phones, and even more, have no computer access outside of school.

Poverty must not be a barrier to learning, and learning must offer an escape from poverty.

It is our job as a society to offer these children a chance to escape from poverty, and a good education will open the door to that chance.

My Project

There is no more exciting experience than opening a book and immersing yourself in another world. But for middle school students who are still learning the skill of reading, accessible books are hard to come by.

"Real poverty is a lack of books." Sidonie Gabrielle stated this truth so clearly.

Many of my students come from homes with no books. Having access to engaging, powerful stories at their reading levels will drive my students to want to read. This drive to read will lead to the discovery of new worlds and foster a lifetime of reading.
