Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are not your "average" students. Many of them come to school without anything to write with and anything to write on. Some can't manage to stay awake during their 1st block class because they were working until 11 to help their single mom support their younger siblings. Some can't focus before lunch because they haven't eaten a meal since their school lunch yesterday. But ll these students have two things in common: they have more heart than most adults I know and, even when they make me insane, they put a smile on my face.

The Spartan Family at SSS has a bond that shows its strength through its students' successes.

Our school is Title I funded, with over 80% of students receiving free and reduced lunches. Our population is wonderfully diverse. These young adults participate in school activities ranging from athletics to robotics, our nationally ranked band to our dedicated NJROTC cadets, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme to Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). Many of them work jobs on top of their extracurricular activities, time managing their lives to succeed in and out of the classroom.

My Project

I've noticed over the years that students have a tendency to shy away from reading. I've heard every excuse from "I don't have time" to "I just don't like it." As an English teacher and avid book lover, this breaks my heart -- and drives me to make a change.

The truth is, books are the cheapest vacation you can take -- they can take you literally anywhere, from Wonderland to Panem, Neverland to the center of the Earth.

My goal is to guide my students to love reading, and I believe that part of achieving that goal is to give them a choice in what they read. If they are anything like me, the moment they are told they have to read a particular title, they are turned off to it -- whether or not it's one they would enjoy.

I've researched multiple lists of novels for reluctant readers and I've compiled a list that is eclectic and relevant to the students I teach. Many of these selections include issues that impact these students daily: bullying, peer pressure, identity crisis, love, just to name a few. My students will be choosing a title and reading it on their own, outside of class, as well as completing assignments and collaborating with each other to explore central idea and real world issues within the texts.
