My Students

This is my first year in special education. I am teaching life skills to non verbal to mildly verbal high school students. I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to teach these students My classroom is full of worksheets, but I want to incorporate more hands on learning in the core subject areas of math, science, social studies, and reading. I am so in need of manipulatives so that students can have more hands on learning activities in my classroom.

My Project

The use of manipulatives has been proven to help students hone their thinking skills. Manipulatives are important tools in helping students to think and reason in more meaningful ways. By incorporating manipulatives in the learning process, students attain concrete ways to compare and operate on quantities by using manipulatives as pattern blocks, tiles, and cubes that will contribute to the development of well-grounded, interconnected understandings of mathematical ideas.

In order to gain a deep understanding of core subject ideas, students need to be able to integrate and connect a variety of concepts in many different ways.

The effective use of manipulatives can help students connect ideas and integrate their knowledge so that they gain a deep understanding of core subject content.

Teachers play a crucial role in helping students use manipulatives successfully, so that they move through the three stages of learning and arrive at a deep understanding of the concepts being taught.
