My Students

I teach art at a small elementary school in Brooklyn, NY for students with severe disabilities. The students in my school are between five and eleven years old. There are thirteen 6:1:1 classes (6 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional) and one 12:1:1 class (12 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional).

Most of the students in my school have Autism Spectrum Disorder, but that doesn't stop them from being amazing and unique artists.

My students really love creating art and exploring new art making materials. They thrive in an environment that is well organized and structured.

My Project

Many of the young artists in my art classes thrive in an environment where they can explore three-dimensional work. I want to use the wooden blocks and the Duplo blocks to give my students the chance to explore the ideas and concept of Architecture. The book Iggy Peck, Architect, is a fun way to introduce the idea of Architecture to my students.

Having two different types of building blocks would allow me to create stations where my students can explore the intersection of STEM concepts such as collaboration, cooperative learning and problem solving skills with the Visual Arts.

Using stations to explore the different building materials would help my students work on their communication skills. On some days of exploration I would have the students work together to design buildings, which would foster their communication skills and help the students to learn how to collaborate. To further develop their problem solving skills I will give my students challenges during classes such as build the highest tower or build a structure that can support the weight of 10 boxes of crayons. My students will also have the opportunity as they work to use the art class iPad to document their buildings.

All of these building materials will give my students access to Architecture, as well as giving them the opportunity to work together and develop their problem solving skills.
