Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a diverse group of 22 first and second grade students at a Title I school. The majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Many of my students are English Language learners. I have a variety of learners in my class and work hard every day to teach and adapt to their different learning styles.

I love how my students are always eager to learn.

They are so inquisitive and creative. I appreciate how hard they try with what ever they do.

They are a very special group. My students are extremely resilient. They work hard and always go into things with a growth mindset. I love how close knit my class is. We focus a lot on building a classroom community and developing good relationships. They are extremely kind and value and respect each other.

My Project

My students work with place value through addition and subtraction and use strategies like math drawings and mental math. Place value blocks are a great way for students to visually see their ones, tens and hundreds. Having physical blocks they can touch and move around can help them when adding and subtracting. We utilize paper place value blocks that often get lost or broken. Having sets that will last long term would be so beneficial for my students.

The STEM items would be used for my students to explore and learn through building, designing, and creating their own centers and reactions.
