Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach special education in an East San Jose middle school. I work with my students in both language arts and math, but I have focused a lot of my interventions in the area of math. All of my seventh and eighth graders have learning disabilities and they still have a hard time with basic math concepts. When I assessed them for basic skills this year, less than half of my class could add, subtract, multiply, and divide proficiently. On top of that, they have difficulty with place value for whole numbers and decimals. I have 1 set of base ten blocks in my class that I use to teach small groups of students these skills. These blocks come in sizes to match the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place values. It is such a strong visual image for my students to work with. The only problem is that this set is not enough to reach everyone. One of my students (who at first thought that blocks are for babies) asked me if everyone could have a set of blocks so that we could have math races for building numbers. His request made me realize that there is a strong need for this in my classroom. So, I am writing to you to request an ample amount of base ten blocks for our math class. I am requesting 2 classroom sets and a matching overhead displays. Thank you in advance on behalf of my students.
