As a teacher of students in low income/single-parent family homes, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention.
Many are students with a range of disabilities, emotional disturbance, and specific learning disabilities. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may deprive them of life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
At our preschool we follow the guidelines of the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale 3rd Edition. I am working to bulk up the supplies for my classroom to meet these guidelines.
These items will enhance the experience of my students when they visit the block center.
The wooden train set will encourage creativity when creating different tracks and encourage playing cooperatively with the sets that they build. The blocks will provide materials for them to build cities and creations with their friends as well as individually. The large trucks will be used on the playground and in the classroom.
All of these items will allow the students to explore and develop at a pace that is appropriate for children ages 3-5 years old.
