Building Bilingualism with the Perfect Picture Books (Spanish 1)

My Project
I've been an ELA teacher for 11 years, but next school year I'm also taking on a new adventure--teaching Spanish 1 and 2! As a fluent Spanish-speaker certified by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), I'm excited to reach new students and help them prepare for their futures.
My Spanish 1 learners will come from a variety of backgrounds, and the picture books in this project will provide ALL of them with an engaging way to build their new language skills.
Many students will be non-Hispanic learning Spanish from "square one," but we will also have many students who come from Hispanic backgrounds and have never received any formal instruction in their native tongue at all. We have a lot of Spanish speakers in our area, so learning Spanish is an extremely valuable skill for basically any future career for my students. We're going to start off strong!
In Spanish I class, my students will receive a variety of opportunities to improve their ability to read, write, listen, and speak in Spanish, and these picture books will be a perfect catalyst. We will use the books in class in a variety of ways--for silent personal reading, of course, but also whole-class story time or reading aloud in small groups, or with partners. The picture books will provide an engaging and low-stakes opportunity for students to gain new Spanish vocabulary, and the visuals will support them in their language acquisition.
These books will be labeled and curated in a new special Spanish-language section of our classroom library. Students will be able to check out books as well, to give them even more opportunities to learn both inside and outside of school.
