Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are thoughtful, curious readers who deserve opportunities to encounter books that challenge them academically while also giving them something meaningful to discuss, question, and connect to their own lives. In our English classroom, we do more than read for plot. Students examine how authors develop ideas, analyze characters and conflicts, evaluate an author’s choices, discuss multiple interpretations, and use evidence to develop their own arguments.

This project will provide classroom sets of three very different novels: *Anna Karenina*, *Between Shades of Gray*, and *Alice in Wonderland*.

Together, these texts will allow my students to experience literature across different genres, time periods, cultures, and levels of complexity. Students might investigate the social expectations and complicated relationships of *Anna Karenina*, examine survival and humanity within the historical context of *Between Shades of Gray*, or explore language, logic, identity, and imagination through *Alice in Wonderland*.

Having enough copies for students to read these books together makes a tremendous difference. Instead of relying only on short excerpts, students can follow ideas across an entire work, notice patterns in an author's craft, participate in sustained discussions, and build the reading stamina necessary for high school, college, and life beyond the classroom.

Most importantly, I want my students to see themselves as people who are capable of reading ambitious books. These novels will help me create a classroom where challenging literature is not something reserved for a select few, but something every student can access, discuss, question, and make their own.
