My Students

My students are seventh and eighth graders with diverse abilities and goals. In my class, students learn reading comprehension strategies, writing, and history. My students are able to complete academic work, but many need more time to process instruction or need to learn strategies so they can get closer to grade level.

Our school is a charter school dedicated to serving students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as other neurodiverse students.

The students at our school have the unique opportunity to receive both regular instruction and specialized IEP services from licensed special education teachers. The school is designed to address the way students with disabilities learn. I teach strategies courses with a partner teacher, who helps our students with math and science. My classroom is about building skills to get students up to grade level in reading. The work we do in this classroom helps students feel confident learning general education content in different ways. We also include social skills instruction and sensory integration throughout the school day.

My Project

In my classroom, students work towards building skills to read and understand texts and books at grade level. Students in my class work on developing reading fluency, vocabulary knowledge, comprehension and writing skills. This project will help students practice their fluency and focus on their reading to develop comprehension.

The Six Minute Solution is a reading fluency program that helps support students develop reading fluency. Access to this resource will help students gain the fluency they need to read better. Reading markers help support students with dyslexia as they follow along reading complex texts. These reading markers are colored, which helps students read the words better. Students will use the reading markers as they read the book Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen. This book is part of the regular grade level curriculum.
