This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

First grade is fun and exciting, with the expectation that by the end of the year students will be able to read. At this point, most of my students are reading well below grade level. My goal is for all of them to read at or above grade level by the end of the year.

My students are an enthusiastic group of first graders in a high poverty community in Northern California.

The majority of them are at an incredible disadvantage because, unlike their middle and upper-class counterparts, they do not have a rich literary environment at home, or access to the latest technology. Just because my students are growing up in poverty does not mean we can't do all we can to bridge that ever growing educational gap.

My Project

Common Core State Standards have the high, but realistic, expectation that students will read both fiction and nonfiction text of complexity appropriate for first grade. These standards can be met when students have the proper learning tools. By increasing my classroom library, I can offer my students the opportunity to choose books At their level that interest them. When students are engaged in what they are reading, they will practice critical reading skills and strategies. Each student will have a book bag with their "just right" level books that they can read independently. A boombox will allow students to listen to and follow along with quality literature that they are not yet able to read on their own. Also, my students will have daily access to powerful literacy apps on the iPads. The use of iPads will encourage even the most reluctant readers.

My first graders are just beginning to discover the joy of reading and their world is only as big as the reading materials they have access to.

I am thrilled by the prospect of watching my students discover the wonder of a really good book, whether they are reading it on their own or listening to it on cd/tape. We need leveled books, a boombox, and iPads to help my students achieve reading success. Your generous donation will help provide my students with the proper learning tools so that they can, and will, be successful.
