My Students
My classroom serves as a home to some of Chicago's most at-risk youth populations. My students use music as a tool to create and to cope. Each student that enters my classroom has a unique story to tell - a story that often begins in struggle and ends in resiliency and hope. The stories they tell are worth more than just words--giving music is giving power to their voices.
Student Demographics:
Low Income: 93.5%
Diverse Learners: 33%
Homeless (w/o permanent or adequate homes): 26.2%
English Language Learners: 14.5%
My Project
**I am launching round 2 of funding for my classroom project "Building Beats" given the outpouring support for the first two projects! Thank you friends, family, and supporters of arts education!** The most effective way to learn about music is through active participation. For my students, this means composing, performing, and recording. Given that the pandemic has shifted learning to become remote, my students are limited in their ability to participate in music making. As a remedy, students have shifted to online music apps that allow them to create their own music; however, these programs are being underutilized without the proper equipment.
I am looking to you for help to raise funds for these additional Midi Piano Controllers.
With these pianos, students will be able to make their own beats and melodies using drum pads and piano keys.Most importantly, students will be reconnected with an instrument that they can tactically and creatively explore in person at home. I am looking to develop a class set to accommodate for less sharing during remote learning.
