Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners in a Spanish developmental bilingual program, which means that they are exposed to listening and speaking in English, but learn Spanish reading and writing first. These students transition into English reading and writing in second grade. My students attend one of the largest public elementary schools in Wisconsin, with nearly 800 students, 98% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunches. As the second and third grade English as a Second Language Teacher, I help to bridge Spanish and English Literacy.
If you were to enter my classroom, you would hear students speaking primarily in Spanish, but as I enter the room students begin to shift to English!
They are bridging two languages to become future leaders in an ever-changing world and I will do all that I can to support them.
My Project
An interactive 45 minute preshow workshop will prepare my students to see the First Stage Production of Judy Moody and the Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt.
It will help my students gain a deeper understanding of the play's theme using imaginative and integrated methods for exploration.
My students will also learn problem solving and communication skills. They will have the opportunity to work in groups and make connections with the community.
Many of my students have never been to a play. This workshop will give them the necessary background knowledge to make the field trip meaningful. They will gain vocabulary and an idea of what to expect in order to be active participants on the field trip.
