Building an Inclusive Classroom

My Project

As a first-year teacher in a Title I school, I’m working hard to build a classroom that’s inclusive, supportive, and responsive to all types of learners. To help meet diverse needs and remove barriers related to limited access to materials, these tools will support students in succeeding and belonging.

Some students may experience sensory overstimulation, which can make it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in a busy classroom.

Noise-canceling headphones will help them stay grounded and able to participate in their learning without feeling overwhelmed. LCD writing tablets will support students during math talks, allowing them to work through problems and share their thinking on the tablets, especially helpful for those who may struggle to verbally participate.

Wobble cushions give students the ability to move their bodies while staying engaged, which is important for third graders who need movement to stay focused. Art supplies will encourage creativity, confidence, and self-expression through projects like identity maps and self-portraits. This will foster student belonging in our classroom.

These tools will ensure that no student is held back by a lack of materials, and that every child feels set up to succeed and belong in our classroom.
