This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The past two years have been full of emotional turbulence for adults and children. Many students are coming to school with a plethora of emotions and little awareness of how to work through those emotions. I would like to provide my students with the tools they need to grow into their best self. I currently incorporate many different mindfulness and restorative practices that focus on the child as a whole, but I have found I need to do more to support them through their big emotions. I intend to do more by providing my students with more read alouds to model the five social and emotional competencies - self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
My students are incredibly lovable but sometimes need an extra push to be loving, empathetic, and compassionate towards others and themselves.
This social emotional library collection is intended to support this need. By incorporating more social and emotional learning, my hopes are my students will grow more emotional intelligence daily. I plan to start every day with social and emotional instruction. This includes reading a book (specifically one in this project!), writing a reflection in their journal based on a topic relevant to the book, or a powerful activity to build my classroom community.
These books are great because of the organic and open discussion they naturally lend way to. During and after reading, students are invited to share their connections to the characters and then hopefully to each other. The goal here is to build a higher capacity for both intra- and interpersonal relationships. No emotion is negative and defining, nor are they individually unique - we all have emotions and I would love for my students to find the power in accepting and successfully navigating their own emotions.
