Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

During this school year my students and I started on a journey of a thinning classroom. The idea of this came from reading and research of the book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, by Peter Liljedahl. The concept uses "Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces" for students to think through, collaborate, and solve problems. The book shares, "What emerged as optimal was to have the students standing and working on vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPSs) such as whiteboards, blackboards, or windows. It did not matter what the surface was, as long as it was vertical and erasable (non-permanent). The fact that it was non-permanent promoted more risk taking, and the fact that it was vertical prevented students from disengaging. Taken together, having students work, in their random groups, on VNPSs had a massive impact on transforming previously passive learning spaces into active thinking spaces where students think, and keep thinking, for upwards of 60 minutes."

So far this year, I have seen more engagement and student understanding of math tasks (increased achievement scores) in my class overall by using this method of learning discovery and problem solving and I would like to continue and build upon this for the students coming to my classroom in future years, providing better work spaces for them to do this type of thinking.

This will require more permanent, large whiteboard spaces (whiteboard/dry erase paint/set up materials) and the tools (markers, erasers, etc.) that they will utilize daily to engage in the thinking classroom. I am super excited to roll this type of learning into other subjects as well since I have witness such success in math! Thank you for considering and donating to this learning project!
