My Students

Margret Fuller said, "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader." My classroom consists of 19 kindergarten students who are learning to read and count so tomorrow they can become leaders.

Each day is filled with excitement as we are introduced to yet another phonogram that will unlock the code and create readers and future leaders.

My students love to gather on the carpet to listen to our read aloud during the day. Whether it be a fiction or non-fiction book, they gather eagerly to hear the words on the page and see the pictures when possible. Numeracy time is also a time my students love because they get to learn all about numbers through hands on learning.

My Project

Building a strong literacy foundation in kindergarten will ensure that students become successful readers and writers later on. There are many tools that we can use in our classroom to help us accomplish this goal. Having some fine motor skills games will provide students with extra practice that will build their finger muscles to prepare them to write the phonograms and later read words they have written. Part of building a literacy foundation is sharing great pieces of literature with our students. Having nursery rhymes and big books give the students the opportunity to learn lessons from the characters in the story, build their vocabulary, and interact with the text.

Both reading and math literacy are essential for building a strong foundation.

By using math games and number talks, kindergarteners are able to learn the foundational number sense skills necessary to succeed in math. My students love to play math games that also help them learn to recognize and work with numbers. Whenever I announce that we are going to play a game, the excitement is built.
