Flexible seating is a very effective way to keep students engaged and comfortable in their learning environment. It gives students a sense of ownership in how they will complete learning tasks. It also contributes to success in their daily work. In our classroom, we have few flexible seating options. My students love it when it is time to do independent work. As soon as the assignment is made, a hand shoots up into the air and asks, "Can we move around the room and work?" They grab their clip boards and head off to a quiet spot to work comfortably on their assignments. My students are much more focused, engaged, and comfortable when they can take ownership of their learning by picking where they will work. With new wobble seats and balance balls, they could choose to sit at a desk or table with a chair that allows them to move while they work. Comfy floor seats and pillows allow students comfort while also being on the floor, which is one of their favorite places to be. Because all of these seating options are portable, they can be used in a variety of places around our classroom. I have seen the positive effects of the limited flexible seating we do have, and I would love to expand it to help my students feel safe, comfortable, productive, and ready to learn.
