My Students

If I asked you to build a bridge, and all you had to work with was a bag of marshmallows and some spaghetti noodles, how would you approach it? By learning how to solve small problems like these today, my students are learning how to tackle our biggest problems tomorrow.

I teach students from kindergarten through 6th grade at a suburban elementary school in North Phoenix.

Students come to me for 40 minutes every four days. These students are very bright, and they often require modification to make the work more challenging. They are very comfortable using technology for entertainment and socializing, and are ready to become active producers of technology rather than consumers.

My Project

I would begin by having students use CAD software to design and print simple figures which builds their fluency with technology and creates foundational skills, both with the software and workflow. As students gain skills, I would have them create objects to solve a particular task, such as having younger students create a boat that is stable in choppy waters, or older students make a water wheel that can lift a weight to a given height. Challenges like these will inevitably include unsuccessful attempts, allowing students to identify what went wrong, and look for ways to troubleshoot, an essential part of the engineering design process. Finally, I hope to allow as many students as possible to make their own ideas, whether those are toys just for fun, or prototypes of their inventions.

Bringing a 3D printer and filament into the classroom helps to develop an iterative mindset as students create a design, test it, and continually modify the design until it is successful.

It would create a critical connection between the digital world and the real world. A 3D printer helps students understand how they can become creators and designers of the future, not just consumers.
