My Project
Incorporating literacy into the world language classroom is important in many regards: increasing literacy skills in the second language assists literacy skills in the first language, reading is one of the fastest modes of language acquisition, and it closes the content gap between secondary and university level language classes. Thus, my goal for this project is to increase the variety, levels, and purposes of our Spanish classroom library. Several singular titles can be found on the list, and these are categorized as Spanish easy readers. These titles allow for individual silent sustained reading for beginner and intermediate readers. Several small sets of five authentic novels (including Antes de Ser Libre, El Alquimista, and El Unico Destino) were selected so that students can form literary circles to practice not only interpretive communication through reading, but interpersonal communication through discussion of the literature. Finally, a class set of Cajas de Carton was selected in order to teach a class novel at the intermediate to advanced level, as well as incorporate the AP themes into the curriculum.
Altogether, this project will help built my student population's reading competency as well as help their exploration of the Spanish-speaking culture.
I am the only world language teacher in my high school, meaning my students have limited opportunity to interact with world languages. Thus, I want to assure that I have the most enriching classroom possible to build both the language and cultural competency of my students.
