Ms. Merrill from Saint Paul MN is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need access to a classroom library which offers them a variety of choices for enjoyment reading.

My students come from a high poverty area. Approximately 90% of our student population qualifies for free and reduced lunches which has given our school a Title I designation. Because of the high poverty, the access that these students have to materials such as new books is minimal at best.
Even though they are from a high poverty area, my students are some of the brightest minds in our area.
My school focuses on college readiness, and as a result, many students are attending post secondary institutions by their junior year! In English class our focus is always on creating, questioning, doing, and experiencing--much of which they cannot afford to do if not through school.
My students attend school at a small K-12 public charter school which is comprised of 100% African American students. We encourage students to enroll in post secondary education, and while we are so proud of this, we actually lose money by doing so. Because of this funding loss, our school has a huge need for books that the students can select on their own for enjoyment reading.
Enjoyment reading varies by students, so your donation will provide that variety for them.
I have chosen dystopian books the most because those are the books that fly off of my shelves currently--The Maze Runner series, The Hunger Games, Divergent-- all of these are books that are sure to appeal to the students who are already checking books out. Books like A Long Walk to Water and Inside Out and Back Again will allow students realistic story lines to relate to. Finally, I have included books like The Crank Series and some John Green novels to appeal to their emotions and show them stories that are other than their own. While many of these books are fiction, there are several non-fiction books as well.
Through this variety I hope that students will be able to find books that appeal to their interests so that they can really delve into reading. It is through the act of reading that successful students are borne. It is my sincere desire that my students rise above the status quo and be as successful as they aim to be. I know that with your help we can work to close the achievement gap by promoting literacy in our youth.
