Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have approximately 900 students at our school. 90% of our students are Latino and 76% are from low-income families. About 11% of our students are considered special needs. Our students come from hard-working, loving families that want to see their children succeed.
My students are eager to learn and happy to be in school; however, school is challenging for some students who lack social skills, such as the ability to make friends, manage their emotions and/or resolve conflicts positively.
My Project
Having access to quality books that focus on managing emotions and appropriate behaviors will provide my students the opportunity to develop and strengthen their social skills. By reading stories about different social situations and characters that are lovable and relatable, students can reflect on and identify the appropriate behaviors they should display. These books will help my students learn about managing their emotions, promote kindness and respect, as well as fostering a love for reading.
A good foundation in social and emotional learning will help students develop the skills and strategies to be successful citizens in school and become responsible members of the community.
