My students need more than your average classroom in order to thrive. They require specific furniture, a safe place to land, and books/materials that can be adapted to meet their special learning needs.
Donors Choose is asking me to describe what makes my students special- how much time do you have? My students are among some of the most exceptional children I have ever met. I have students with Autism Spectrum disorder, Hunters Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and emotional disorders.
Although the official title of my classroom is "Self-Contained Multiple Disabilities," I like to refer to my students as having varying levels of ABILITIES.
They amaze me each and every day with how quickly they learn, how hard they work, and how brave they can be in a world that is not always accepting of differences. My children inspire me each and every day and I am hoping through this project they can inspire you, too.
My Project
With school funding getting lower and lower it has become very difficult to get what is needed in special education classrooms. My children deserve furniture, materials, and books that can be adapted and utilized to help them meet their potential.
My classroom is not a one-size-fits-all kind of place, requiring many more items to run effectively.
The classroom furniture will help give them different places to sit and learn. I am requesting 2 different seating options that will give my students a chance to wiggle and move while they are learning at the whole group table. My students require books to be adapted, making it challenging to borrow from the school library. Those books that will be ordered can be adapted for my students, so they too can love literature like the rest of their peers. The learning games and materials will be used to help teach both reading and mathematics and will also be used as independent stations to build my student's confidence. The rug and mat will provide a safe place to crash and play on the floor. The Google home will be used throughout the day as a tool for my students who cannot read or write yet, but can request and ask questions with this technology. The sensory tubs will be used as a “calm down” kit, when my students feel frustrated or need an appropriate break. These children deserve access to everything they need, and this project will help jumpstart my classroom inventory!
