My Project

There is nothing more rewarding as an English teacher than to see students grow and thrive through the study of language! This year I will be implementing a slightly modified version of Gail Boushey’s Daily Five, tweaked for high school students. One aspect of this unique approach to classroom structure is the study of vocabulary.

Mastery of language and a varied vocabulary, including code switching and the ability to identify and translate jargon, is key to student success both in and out of the classroom.

Consider this quote from vocabularyzone: “…those with a stronger vocabulary were more likely to succeed in a variety of subjects throughout college, linking it to their greater facility with both reading and writing.” It makes sense, then, to approach the study of vocabulary in a deliberate and engaging fashion!

As part of the Daily Five structure, students will cycle through a vocabulary center. This center is an advanced version of what is traditionally seen in an elementary classroom. Our version, however, will include materials to work through guided exercises that will focus on creating dynamic word walls; researching root words, prefixes and suffixes; identifying and translating business jargon in a variety of fields; and so much more.

These supplies I am requesting will make this “station” an exciting, high-interest part of the classroom, and a space where students will discover a love of language. Help me make this spark of an idea into reality, and in the process help me to prepare those who will be taking us into the future!
