Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and civically engaged 6th graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school sponsored events.

My students desire to be challenged academically and grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they all can achieve greatness.

My Project

I want to ensure that my students have access to text-rich reading materials at varying levels. My students need a variety of fiction and non-fiction books at varying levels, including books with pictures like "The Dreamer" and "Island Born." By reading books from the "Who Is/Who Was" series, my students will get a quick glimpse into the lives of well known historical figures and spark an interest for further research. Realistic fiction books like, "Harbor Me" and "The Turtle of Oman" tackle contemporary issues from a pre-teen perspective, to which some students will readily relate.

With a variety of engaging texts at different reading levels my students will dig deeper into novel study, participate in deeper discussion about non-fiction themes, and have books to use as anchor texts to assist in their own writing.

By providing my students with engaging texts, the will better understand the world in which they live and be able to engage in academic discussion about multiple topics. These texts will also assist my English Language Learners in improving their vocabulary usage, understanding of syntax, and grammar skills through the use stimulating texts.

Through the addition of new books in our classroom library my students will grow as life-long readers and learners.
