My students need craft kits, fitness equipment, and board games to develop social-emotional skills and build relationships through restorative practices.
My students are overage middle schoolers that travel across town to an inner-city behavioral program to receive extra support from small class sizes, mentoring, and coaching. Many have difficulties finding positive coping skills and regulating their social-emotional selves in and out of the classroom. Many have diagnosed learning differences in the form of IEPs. My students demographic is 100% African American, and 100% of them receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students come from impoverished communities and many have experienced trauma that has impacted their educational progress.
Our faculty recognizes how ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, affect student development. As a result, our students are treated with extra compassion and care.
My Project
Our school focuses discipline methods on restorative practices, which emphasizes how relationships and people are harmed through negative behaviors, rather than being punitive. An important aspect of restorative practices is building a positive school community wherein students feel safe to come to school and safe to share details about their lives, which builds tolerance and empathy.
I am requesting board games, craft kits, fitness equipment, and classroom decorations to create a community room in our school that will be used to build relationships between teachers, staff, and students.
These materials will reinforce our school's PBIS incentives as well as provide a comfortable and safe space for students to decompress and focus on positive and fun aspects of being in school. Many of our students have been out of school for several years. Your donations will help ensure their success in attending school because there will be tangible rewards for good behavior.
