This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The goal of this project is to renew our classroom library. Reading instruction is usually broken into two categories. In K-2, students are learning to read, and starting from 3rd grade they are reading to learn. I want to make sure we don't forget to focus on the third category: reading for enjoyment. I want my students to enjoy reading whether they struggle with reading or they excel in it.

Students should see themselves in the books they read and be able to relate to the characters.

I want the children to have many choices and be able to select books that are of high interest, adventurous, and humorous.

I'm starting with fictional texts but this is the beginning of a larger project. I have selected books with diverse characters as well as newer copies of classic 3rd-grade chapter books. I've also tried to choose more book series so that when students find a character they like, they can go back to them over and over again. Throughout the school year, I will be adding more picture books and nonfiction texts that reflect diversity and the interests of young readers today.
