My Students

An effective classroom library inspires students to explore, imagine and read. An effective teacher provides access to engaging, accessible texts through which students both see themselves and have the opportunity to experience a world outside of their own.

Since second grade is one of the most essential reading years of development, my classroom library should provide students with choice, engagement and comfort.

Students in a historically low performing school such as mine need effective, engaging literacy instruction each day in their school year. The most effective instruction comes with plenty of time for students to simply read. My students need to have opportunities to read books daily that support their development as readers. Equally important is that they have access to a wide range of texts that engage them as readers.

My Project

When my students visit bookstores, public libraries or school libraries they gravitate toward the colorful, interesting and kid friendly illustrations of chapter books. The cover illustrations inspire them to open the book and attempt to decode the word and read the text. Often times the text is too difficult for them to read on their own. This doesn't stop them from enjoying the text and wanting to read more. They beg me to check out more of these books from the public library and during reading time rush to grab these to read.

With this project I am hoping to combine this excitement for reading chapter books with my reading instruction by providing access to engaging early readers.

These books will create a whole new section in my library that will draw students to reading. They will provide enough books to go around and students will not have to wait their turn to read the most popular books. I am confident this project will transform my reading block into an eager exploration and devouring of books.
