I work with an incredible group of diverse kindergarten students. Most of the students come from low income families, so educational materials are hard to come by.
Early childhood grades have always been something that is very near and dear to my heart.
There are so many different cultures and personalities, but the one thing that my students all have in common is that they all love to learn and work together as a classroom community. They each have a lot to offer and share.
My Project
I am requesting for a new block center along with some blueprint wiping boards, a self checking magnetic board to go along with the magnetic vocabulary cards. I'm in the process of setting up developmentally appropriate centers in my new classroom. Having a place to build and create is so important in pre-kindergarten. Unfortunately, I only have 1 small tub of about 30 dirty, old wooden blocks for use in my classroom.
Kids learn through play!
They love planning and building new constructions together. Working with blocks is great for spatial visualization and requires the use of higher order thinking skills. It also teaches children how to work together to solve problems. Block play engages the children more than any other area of the classroom.
With these new supplies, we will be able to carry out some of the lesson plans that I found in the new unit of study about homes. The students will have an opportunity to design their own homes using the blue print mats and build it with the blocks.
