Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach drama in a high-need community public school. I teach a great deal of both general education and special education students, as well as direct the school musical and lead the after-school Drama Club.
I have noticed that my students have taken a particular interest in musical theatre. I am so happy that they have found a new genre to enjoy, but I do not have the proper resources to help them continue studying classical and contemporary musical theatre styles. I have my own collection, which as already been worn out by my students, who often take the DVDs and CDs home to learn a new musical number!
What I would really love to do is set up a musical theatre library. I already have the scores and books to several musicals, and I would love to have the cast recordings and DVDs to accompany our collection. This musical collection would be used by my drama classes, my after-school Drama Club, the cast of the spring musical and any other student in the school that shows an interest in musical theatre. My dream is to create a little library in my classroom where students can check out the resources, take them home, and study them on their own time. This would help them prepare for high school auditions, have more knowledge about the productions we are putting on in our school and would give them more information about Broadway theatre (which we live so close to yet so many have not seen a Broadway show)!
My students already have the interest in musical theatre, which, as a teacher, is more than half the battle. Providing them the proper resources that will engage, entertain and inspire them is the other piece to the puzzle. Your donation will ensure that students who have an interest in musical theatre will learn more about the genre that is such an important part of American Theatre.
