My students need a variety of high interest books including Divergent, Stargirl and Loser in order to give them a love for reading and to raise their academic achievement.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Rogers's classroom raised $595
This project is fully funded
My Students
Many of my Middle School students do not have access to high interest books. Our school is located in the Rockaways which is a low-income area and is extremely diverse. At our school we are always working to improve our student's capability to read novels that will inspire them.
My classroom is currently full of color and student work but has no books for the students to borrow!
I consistently reference high interest novels in my classroom as examples and my pupils will raise their hands and ask if they can borrow it. It's inspiring to see them so interested in a book but difficult to then have to tell them they won't be able to borrow it from the classroom. I want to provide my students with classroom access to these high interests novels in order to provide them with the same opportunities for learning as students in more high-income areas.
My Project
The project will allow the students access to more then 80 books on various topics and levels. Each marking period the students will borrow a book of their choice to read and create a report on it. Honing in on the high interest, they are taking on the novels and the students will participate in a 'Book Talk Presentation,' rather then a traditional report. In this report they will summarize the book (without giving away the ending!) and then explain to their peers what they liked about it, how it connected to them and provide a 4 star rating for it. The other students in the class will question them about their reading and use the presentations to help decide which book they will read next.
This Project will greatly improve my classroom by allowing my students the ability to borrow novels that interest them all year long.
Through presentations they will express their knowledge, practice reading techniques, hear book suggestions and engage in conversations with their peers about common literary interests.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
