My Students

I work at a rural high school where there aren't a lot of opportunities to engage in the arts. Most of my students are beginners just trying to get their fine art credit. Not every student loves art but one of the things they love about coming to my class is making projects they choose themselves. My students are all so interesting and unique. They are at an age when they are starting to develope their own identity and I get to see them express themselves through their art. Some of the more creative things I've had students make this year are a four foot can of beans, a Fortnite prom dress, and a set of Angry Bird giant paper mache heads.

My Project

The arts are a great place for students to express their thoughts and feelings during a typical school year but has become especially important this year as students struggle to process the changes in our school and our society as a whole. In my art room I use the T.A.B(teaching artistic behaviors) approach to art education. This is a model of instruction that promotes abundant student choice. A T.A.B. classroom is organized into centers and each center is kept stocked with materials for students to choose from. This year my sculpture center has gotten the most use. Most of my students have very few art materials at home so during virtual instruction, lessons were pencil and paper only. Now that we are in person the students have been so excited to get to build and create again. I am need of sculpture materials, paints and brushes to keep my students happy and building the rest of the school year. I have included air dry and oven baked clays so that I will be able to send materials home with students and allow them to keep working in the event they are quarentined. This has been such a special year for art making with my students please help me get the materials they need to keep building and keep healing.
