Building a Maker Space

My students need a 3D printer and filament to enhance a maker space.

My Students

We are an inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. I teach both math and science. My class is an eclectic mix of students who are bilingual, over-age, accelerated, regular ed. and/or with special needs. Their academic abilities are as diverse as their personalities.

We are moving from fourth grade to fifth together which gives me the advantage of already knowing their strengths and weaknesses before the new school year begins.

This also creates the challenge of making fifth grade feel "different" from fourth grade and not just an extension of last year. I want them to be more responsible for their own learning and more creative in their projects in fifth grade.

My Project

I feel strongly that students learn more and more deeply when they create. It teaches skills that are needed as they go, and expands learning opportunities. I have slowly been building a maker space that has paper, yarn, duct tape, cutting mats and tools but now I want to take it to the next level.

Adding a 3D printer and filament takes everything to a whole new level.

My 5th graders want to feel like middle school kids, not elementary. Using technology engages them and pushes them to problem solve in situations that they self-create. This gives them unlimited opportunity to excel, because they aren't discouraged by their failures. Each failure pushes them to try a new solution.
