This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a special education teacher who specializes in students experiencing Autism in grades 3 to 5 at a Title I school in a low socioeconomic area of Anchorage, Alaska. My students struggle in the areas of social emotional awareness and communication as well as academic skills. All of my students have attention and sensory sensitivities that require many different tools to calm down and de-escalate when they become upset.
Despite these challenges, my students work through these the best they can to reach their goals and dreams.
These amazing kids are eager to learn new things academically and about themselves. They are bright and can be successful when provided the correct tools. I believe in my students, and I want them to believe in themselves as well as know they are loved and supported in our school community.
My Project
Adding a variety of new books to our classroom will enhance student interest in reading and will help improve their reading skills. My classroom library is a space that is occupied throughout the entire day. It is a place that my students really enjoy. I read to them on our couch and carpet, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care and is read frequently. My
Students are thankful for all the opportunities to read and are so excited when I get new books!
All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them over the past couple of years read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose engaging books which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences.
