Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students haven't discovered that feeling, and the Global Read Aloud Project will help create that excitement in reading. We'll read the same book as 1000's of classrooms around the world and collaborate online/live chats.

My students are striving for ways to participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities.

But, they also lack the love of reading for enjoyment. They haven't found that love of reading, yet! If we can get them to love reading for enjoyment, they will learn to read for knowledge and enrichment, too. I hope to help get my students to that point and ignite that spark for learning and becoming life-long learners. Let me give you a brief description of my 4th grade classroom and school. Our school is in a high-poverty, low social economic area with 91% of our school receiving free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch. The demographics are: 86% Hispanic, 7% African-American, 6% Caucasian, 1% Other. 57% of our students are English Language Learners. Only about 22% of our parents have taken a college/vocational class and about 4% have a college degree.

My Project

We are requesting a class set of Fish in a Tree. Why the Global Read Aloud Project? Global collaboration is necessary to show students that they are part of something bigger than them. That the world needs to be protected and that we need to care for all people. You can show them pictures of kids in other countries but why not have them speak to each other? Then the caring can begin. Last year, my class participated and loved it. We read everyday, they collaborated online with blogs with others around the world, and they even participated Skype calls with foreign classrooms. The experiences from this project will be remembered forever by those students. I hope to continue this project this year, too. The project was created in with a simple goal in mind; one book to connect the world. 5 years later and more than 200,000 connections made, they realized they were on to something larger. The premise is simple; pick a book to read aloud to students during a set 6-week period.

I envision my students working together and learning collaboratively with this Global Read Aloud Project.

They will collaborate with other students outside our room. This will enhance and excite my students' love of reading. Students will be able to learn from each other and practice working together as they learn to read on a global level. Can't you just see all my students wanting to read and talk about this book because they can discuss it with other students around the globe?
