Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want to create a classroom where reading can take my students to far away places and on great adventures. I want them to experience things they never dreamed of! I want to make reading fun and have them develop a life long love for reading.
I am a 4th grade reading/writing teacher for 45 high poverty ELL students.
I work in a Title I Renaissance school where over 90% of our students get free lunches and many families work very hard in the fields all day everyday to support their family! For many of my students English is their second language and they are below level in reading needing extra support to help them make the necessary gains to increase their reading fluency. Many of my students do not have the resources at home to help support them improve their reading skills. My students come to school every day and work very hard every minute of the day. They come from very low-income families where buying even the many necessities can be difficult and at times impossible. This makes it difficult for many of the families to purchase books and reading resources for their children to use at home. I want to provide my students with experiences they never dreamed of having through reading!
My Project
My students need these teaching tools, such as What's the point?, 5-Minute Vocabulary Practice Cars and Read and Respond Cards to help them get the focused practice they need to become skilled critical readers! My students will be using these teaching tools in a small group setting. These resources will allow my students to receive focused instruction on the many strategies they need to become critical readers! The small groups will allow students to receive more focused attention in their target areas.
These teaching resources will allow me the ability to give my students the focused attention on the reading skills they need so they can become successful readers.
I believe once my students build confidence in their ability as a reader they will love reading the way that I do!
