My Students
I work for a large urban school district, where I teach diverse students with diverse language backgrounds. After two of the strangest school years I've ever experienced as a teacher and construction delay after construction delay, we have finally moved from our temporary location to a brand new Pre-K center.
When we are full, I will have 20 eager four-year-old children.
Many of these children were two-years-old when our pandemic lockdown began and they missed many opportunities to go to playgrounds and experience the world.
We are already noticing that we have a unique class with fine-motor, gross-motor, and social-emotional needs, some of which are different from what we are used to in a typical four-year-old preschool classroom.
My Project
My classroom was fortunate enough to have a listening center donated to it. The only problem is that the listening center takes CDs and I do not have many books on CD.
Early Literacy is so important.
Since my students are in preschool, most of them are not yet able to read on their own. However, they thoroughly enjoy having a book read to them. I am asking for sets of the same book and a CD of the book so that my students can listen to books in small groups during centers and small group times. I am asking for classic titles such as, "Caps For Sale." This book is a classic. The children love acting the book out and it also has a mathematics activity, sorting, embedded in it. Other books include "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom," which goes through all of the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. "Rosie's Walk" is another classic book that helps children learn positional words. There is also the chance to tell their own story about the second main character in the story. In total, this project will bring my students four copies of ten different stories and 10 CDs that they can listen to independently when they want to hear a book and my assistant and I are unable to read to them.
This would give them one more opportunity for a rich literacy experience daily.
