Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We all have favorite books, favorite authors, and favorite quotes that we reference in our lives. The books that engage us help us develop a love of reading.

Our school is a K-8 charter school in an urban area.

Our students are diverse and they all strive to be "civic-minded leaders, accomplished writers, and resilient lifelong learners." Becoming accomplished writers and lifelong learners means that students must be exposed to a variety of quality literature. My first graders need graphic novels such as Jeff Smith's "Little Mouse Gets Dressed" to learn how he uses daily tasks such as getting dressed and humor to craft an enjoyable fictional tale in comic strip form that students will excitedly and effortlessly enjoy reading.

My Project

By being exposed to graphic novels, my young students will learn develop a genuine love of reading. Having these types of books in our first grade classroom library will make the specialized genre of graphic novels available to my students. My students will build their vocabulary, learn different writing techniques, and become stronger readers and writers overall.

Exposure to quality literature helps students learn to love reading.

Our students are preparing for a future where every person is not only an successful reader and accomplished writer, but also a lifelong learner and an active participant in a digital, interconnected world.
