Building a Leveled Library for Curious Readers

My students need a variety of just right books at their level that will spark their interest and intrigue as they continue on their road to literacy.

My Students

Imagine walking into a classroom and seeing a class of first graders reading independently or with a partner, devouring a book to find pleasure or meaning and then later sharing about what they experienced as they read, and what they are learning about themselves as they are becoming lifelong readers.

Our class is a wonderful spirited group of six and seven year old boys and girls that are extremely creative, curious, talented and genuine.

We are a diverse group of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and languages and have much to share, give and learn. They love exploring, working together, experimenting and sharing great stories and books.

My Project

By having a variety of fiction and nonfiction literature at their just right levels, the students will be able to engage in their books, explore the text, make connections, practice comprehension skills, learn new concepts, and most importantly not reach a level of frustration that could prevent them from wanting to continue on the path to literacy but rather engage and aid in the journey. The ability of having a vast library at their hands will also allow the students to experience new books, new adventures and new conversations to share and continue to inspire one another. Also, with the leveled collections, the children will be able to progress through the levels and continue to have books to read, enjoy and learn from throughout the year.

This project is so important because it will be bringing literature to the students.

They will be able to have a book in their hands at all times which they will be able to read and either learn something about themselves or the world around them. These will be the books, the tools, which will allow them to continue to grow and become active and involved readers.
