This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Technology is a key element in education. It is vital for our students to have exposure to different types of technology. In my current classroom, I have some technology that is beneficial to the class as a whole; however, they do not have the opportunity to use technology as individuals.
My students are an enthusiastic group of four and five year old kids who are like little sponges, ready to soak up knowledge.
They are growing up in an urban setting where many of them live in homes with limited resources. Many of them do not have computer access at home. Our school serves pre-k to fifth grade students. They have access to desktop computers in our lab for about a half an hour twice each week.
My Project
A number of teachers at my school have received Kindle Fires from DonorsChoose. They are able to meet and share ideas about how to use the tablets with their students. I want my students to also have the opportunity to do learning activities on the tablets. My students need 2 Amazon Kindle Fire tablets and cases. They will use the tablets during center time when they are working independently in different areas of the classroom, while I work with small groups of students.
There are applications that I will download and use to help students with reading and mathematics. Technology helps to engage students in learning and reach students who might have difficulty learning in a traditional classroom setting. Each of my students will be able to take turns on the tablets to strengthen specific skills.
In the world that our kids are growing up in, it is vital that they not only have exposure to computers and technology, but that they become experts with technology.
There are many educational settings and home environments in which kids are surrounded by technology. This is not the case for my students. I want to give my students the opportunity to gain comfort with computers. They will benefit greatly from the opportunities to use the tablets in class.
