Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our community of learners are driven, curious and eager to explore. Sourcing appropriate and practical learning tools that match that enthusiasm while being realistic purchases for our teaching team has been an ongoing source of challenge.

My teaching team is dreaming of a library of manipulatives for our learners to build fine motor skills and to drive engagement with our literacy, science and math goals.

A majority of our learners have and will enter into our classroom with their primary fine motor skills being developed through heavy tablet use. As such we have a high need for tools that emphasize spatial awareness and dexterity play in addition to providing grounding for abstract concepts beyond repeated recording on paper.

My pragmatic short term goal is to utilize a 3d printer and the vast library of available files to produce the tools that we need for our in-class ambitions and to finally put us in a place where we can send resources home with students. Providing families with learning tools has been a choice that we have constantly needed to balance against what we have available in our own classrooms.

Our expanded goals are to provide tools for our gardening and outdoor space engagement ambitions, to provide student growth and incentive pieces and to introduce the connection between imagination, technology and engineering.

A long term goal would be exploring the benefits this tool could provide to our site as a whole with an emphasis on our upper grade big buddies.

I recognize that a 3d printer is a tool with challenges! It has resource needs, a requirement for research, patience and ongoing investment of time. I feel that those costs would be justified by the freedom to produce the tools that our learners would greatly benefit from.

Thank you for your consideration!
