Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My pre-K students come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are experiencing a classroom setting for the very first time and have never interacted with children their own age. Their social-emotional development is crucial at such an influential stage. Many students are discovering how to express themselves. The majority of my students are learning English for the first time and have recently moved here from other countries. Many receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status and are being raised in single-parent households. Despite these challenges, my students love coming to school to learn.
My students are energetic, kind, and extremely intelligent children.
Their imaginations and intelligence never fail to impress me. Their passion and determination to learn and grow are what make me proud to call myself their pre-K teacher.
My Project
The blocks and building center is an essential center in Pre-K. It is the center where STEAM education can be presented. With these materials I am requesting, my students will have plenty of STEM opportunities to think mathematically and scientifically to become little engineers and build something amazing. They can use the magnetic blocks and shapes to calculate how many they will need to create a specific structure. They can use the life size tiles to build boats and homes for their friends. The possibilities are endless.
Having a blocks and building center that is rich with appropriate STEM materials, such as the ones I am requesting, will help my students gain higher order thinking skills that are critical for their development.
Simple items such as the ramps I am requesting can help my students to begin to understand the laws of gravity, help them make predictions, test hypotheses, and build scientific reasoning. They can also develop mathematical skills such as measurement, and geometry. The STEM opportunities are endless.
This project will not only help my students academically, it will also help them develop key social skills. These materials will require my students to work together and cooperate while learning through play. My students will learn how to take turns, share materials, and cooperate with others. As a result, my students will become self-reliant, increase their attention span, and develop self-esteem. Help us build an amazing blocks and building center where all students can grow through STEM education.
