My Students

My students are inquisitive and curious about the world around them. While many may say that science isn't for them, or that science is hard, the process of questioning the world around them and seeking answers comes naturally. My favorite thing in the world is seeing their eyes light up when they practice this process and find answers on their own.

As Carl Sagan said, "The method of science, as stodgy and grumpy as it may seem, is far more important than the findings of science." Through inquiry-based learning, I seek to fan the flames of scientific enthusiasm.

Students want to be awed by what has been discovered and want tools to find out what is real and what isn't.

My Project

In my 9th grade scientific reasoning class, we re-enact the experiments that led to the germ theory of disease. In the process, students get hands-on experiences understanding the differences between a scientific theory and how theory is used outside of the classroom. With these digital microscopes, we will be able to further understand microbes and how they spread.

My charter school does not have the money for this quality of a microscope but I really believe that a deeper understanding of how science knows what it knows will help them avoid misinformation.
