Building a Diverse and Welcoming Space for Young Learners

Help me give my students racially diverse books, classroom rugs, and student journals to create a more inclusive, comfortable, and expressive learning environment for my third-grade students.

My Project

As a dedicated second-grade teacher at a low-income school, I’m reaching out with a heartfelt request to help me create a more inclusive, welcoming, and empowering learning environment for my students. I am seeking support for three key items that will greatly enrich our classroom: racially diverse books, classroom rugs, and student journals.

Many of my students rarely see themselves represented in the books they read.

By adding culturally responsive and racially diverse books to our library, I can ensure every child sees characters and stories that reflect their lives, cultures, and potential. Representation matters—it fosters pride, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Additionally, we are in need of new classroom rugs. These rugs are more than just floor coverings—they help define reading and discussion areas, give students a cozy space to gather, and promote a sense of safety and community. A comfortable environment invites engagement and supports social-emotional learning.

Lastly, journals are a vital tool for reflection, creative expression, and developing strong writing habits. With your help, each student will have their own journal to use throughout the year, building not only writing skills but confidence in their voice.

Every donation—no matter the size—makes a meaningful difference. Your generosity will help me foster a classroom that values diversity, encourages creativity, and supports academic success. Thank you for considering my request and for believing in the power of education.
